We’re just a few weeks away from our Race to Brunch 5K and Festival at Caliterra in Dripping Springs, and if you’ve never run a 5K before, this is a great one to start. Not only will you get to enjoy the fresh Texas Hill Country air and breathtaking views, but you’ll also get to enjoy all the fun festivities we have planned. To help you make sure you’re all set, we’ve got a few tips on how to train.
Begin with a Good Warm-Up
First things first, let’s start with the warm-up. If you try to just get up from your couch and run a 5K, you’re going to hurt yourself. Start first with a simple warm-up that involves plenty of stretching. Stretching not only increases flexibility, but it also helps you to avoid injury. The best way to stretch is to slowly ease your way into the position and hold it for 30-45 seconds. Now that you’re all limbered up, let’s start moving.
Start with Short Runs and Walk When You Need to
Don’t feel like you have to start your training by running a full 5K. Start slow, with short runs, and don’t feel discouraged if you have to stop and walk from time to time. In fact, it’s better training practice to push yourself to run at faster speeds in short bursts and then walking for slightly longer periods. Start by running for 15 seconds and then walking for 45 seconds and do that for just 30 minutes a day. Then, each week just shift the time over so that it plays out as 20/40, 30/30, 45/15 and lastly 60/0. For the runners who are just trying to get started, by following the Couch to 5K training guide.
Make Sure to Cool Down After Each Run
To ensure that after each little training run that you’re setting your body up for a proper recovery, you’ll want to finish off your run with a little more walking and stretching. This is to help with any lactic acid that may buildup in your body while running and also decrease your risk of injury.
We’re getting really excited for the Race to Brunch 5K and Festival, and we hope these simple training tips help to set you up for running success.
