A Little About Pound Farmstead History
In 1847, Joseph M. Pound left his home in Kentucky for Texas to help fight in the war with Mexico. After the war, he returned to Kentucky where he completed his medical education. In the early 1850s, he and his wife Sarah decided to move to Central Texas. That town where they built their two-room log cabin eventually came to be known as Dripping Springs.
The Pounds are known as the founding family of the town. They helped build the foundation of the community. Their farmstead property has served as a hospital, schoolhouse, and social gathering place.
Unheard of at the time, Dr. Pound invested in sustainable living. He had a self-watering trough for farm animals, an in-ground hothouse to keep his medicinal herbs and vegetable seeds growing during the cold weather months, and a rainwater collection cistern.
The Pound House earned a Texas State Historic Landmark status in 1965 and appears on the National Register of Historic Places. This is one of those places every Dripping Springs resident should visit at least once. The Pumpkin Fest is the perfect opportunity.
