There are still several weeks of summer vacation and plenty of summer fun to be enjoyed. But before you know it, the school buses will be rolling out, and teachers will begin preparing lesson plans.
Getting kids back on a school schedule after a long summer break of sleeping in can be an adjustment, but a little planning will help with the transition.
Set Up a Schedule
After two months of sleeping later, getting kids acclimated to an early wake-up time can be tricky. It’s best not to wait until the first day of school but to start having them wake up at the appropriate time, at least a week in advance, to readjust.
Do the same for dinner and children’s bed times to help their internal clock get readjusted with the daily school schedule.
Create a Family Calendar
For many families, the start of the school year means picking back up with extracurricular activities. To help prevent stress overload for everyone, be sure to set up a family calendar where everyone can see what’s going on (the fridge is a good spot). This will help to inform everyone who has soccer practice on Tuesdays and who has theater club on Thursdays.
Get School Supplies Early
Many big box stores have back-to-school sales, and while these can be great for snagging good deals, many supplies get snatched up early.
Aim to get your child’s school supply list from their school as early as possible and then hit up the stores to snag those items that sell out quickly. The items that are always in stock (pens, paper, markers) you can grab when they go on sale with those back-to-school promotions.
Set Up a Study Area
A designated study space in your home is important for a child’s focus. Not every study space will work for every kid, so parents should set it up in an area that works for their child. Some kids may do better studying solo in a quiet place, while others may thrive in the hustle and bustle around the kitchen table.
Wherever your child’s study space, be sure that it’s well-lit for good reading and that there’s enough space for them to spread out all of their study materials and supplies.
Set Kid-Friendly Goals
Each new school year is the chance for a fresh start and goals can help motivate children to try something new and improve on previous areas.
A few goals to consider discussing with your child:
- Read more books
- Try a new extracurricular activity
- Improve on homework routines or subjects that were a struggle last year
- Make a new friend
Whatever goals are set, it’s important that parents and children talk about these together and celebrate wins along the way.
