Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center, formerly known as Westcave Preserve, is a nonprofit organization that aims to inspire people to enjoy and protect nature. Behind the organization are advocates who work to protect and take pleasure in nature. The best part? It’s only a 20-minute drive to the preserve for Caliterra residents in Dripping Springs.
About Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center
Located in Round Mountain in southwest Travis County, the 76-acre preserve serves as an outdoor classroom. Visitors can explore, discover, and appreciate its extraordinary natural surroundings. It creates a bond between people and nature.
But that’s not all. The leadership of the Children in Nature Collaborative of Austin (CiNCA) aims to ensure kids learn to feel comfortable starting at an early age. They need to have access to it and learn about its importance.
They want children to experience fun and that their connection to the natural world turns into an important part of their daily lives as kids and eventually as adults. Westcave has a partnership with El Ranchito summer camp to extend its mission and connect youth to nature.
The Westcave Facebook page shares lots of incredible photos and resources. Recent posts include breathtaking aerial photos of Westcave’s Preserve from above. In one of the photos, it looks like the bottom half is in the shape of Texas. You’ll find wildflowers, birds, and lush greenery.
Events at Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center
The preserve holds many events to educate attendees on all things nature. They have spring specialty programs that include bird and nature hikes. On these hikes, participants look and listen for birds and explore flowers, bugs, and lizards that show up on the walk.
The Celebration of Children in Nature Awards takes place in September. The purpose of the awards are to recognize individuals who represent innovative and successful initiatives to get kids in Central Texas out into nature. These partners and friends have contributed and committed to a brighter and more informed tomorrow for everyone.
For Walk Through the Grotto, a guide takes participants on a 15-minute walk from an arid savanna through a limestone crevice into a sheltered canyon filled with lush plants. At the end of the walk, attendees will arrive at the head of the canyon with its stunning 40-foot waterfall. Guests can relish the splendor for 30 minutes. Note that this event requires reservations.
