With the colors of autumn making the perfect backdrop, now is the ideal time to plan a family fall photo shoot.
Plan Outfits Accordingly
You probably don’t need to go out and buy an entirely new wardrobe for the family (but if you want to, that’s cool too), but you should keep a few tips in mind.
- Avoid matching outfits – a break in colors and textures adds contrast.
- Follow your style – Whether it’s sporty, preppy, or a little bit country, keep with a style that reflects your family.
- Avoid logos and graphics – Your family should be the attention of the photos, not a graphic or logo.
- Layers – Yes, it’s often still hot in Texas, but jackets, hats, vests, and scarves tend to signal fall more than tank tops and shorts.
- Colors – Burgundy, yellow, orange, dark green, and navy are always a safe bet for a fall color palette.
Use Elements for a Seasonal Touch
While you could do a family photo shoot inside, we’d advise you not to. Fall is a beautiful time in the Texas Hill Country, so why not let nature provide the scenic backdrop for your family?
Cornfields, wooded areas where the leaves have just begun to change, and even an urban setting, such as on a walking bridge, all make for a great backdrop.
If you want to keep things close to home, consider using your front or back porch as the photo setting and decorate it with an array of pumpkins or maybe some dried corn stalks to add an element of autumn.
Don’t Be Afraid of Candid Shots
Posed photos have their place and get everyone (hopefully) looking at the camera at the same time. But candid photos are a wonderful way to let your family’s personality shine through and inject a sense of energy into the photographs.
If it’s just you as a couple doing the photo session, consider asking the photographer to follow behind as you explore a park or simply share some conversation. If the entire family is in the mix (pets, too), a leaf pile in the yard or tossing around the football can make for some fantastic candid shots with a fun, natural feel.
Get the Timing Right
Ask any photographer, and they’ll tell you that timing and lighting are everything. When it comes to fall foliage in Central Texas, the colors start to change around late October and reach their peak around mid-November. Photographers tend to fill up schedules in advance, so reach out now to book something.
As for the time of day, mornings are great for kiddos as they’re rested, and the lighting is going to be better than the mid-day sun. If your family can hold it together, though, just before dusk or the “golden hour” is the best because the lighting tends to really make the fall colors pop.
